All right, my pretties, you've asked for it, you're going to get it.
A little background for the uninitiated: Last year, StyleyGeek created a spinoff of National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo, for us geeky academics: International Dissertation Writing Month, or InaDWriMo. Being the inclusive type, she expanded it to allow for other types of academic writing so those of us who had already graduated could play along. (This makes it International acaDemic Writing Month for you sticklers.) Lina suggested yesterday that we do it again, and there's been a great deal of interest, so we're doing it again!
Here's the deal: It starts November 1 and ends November 30. You set your own goal (totally up to you), and keep a word meter or word count on your blog to track your progress. (here are a couple of word meters.) You can only count the words written in November. You can get as competitive and trash-talking as you like (*cough* see Weezy for an example). At the end, the winner... well, the winner gets the pride of a job well done. Or maybe I can send a postcard. But it won't be from Australia.
I am going to pledge 20,000 words, which will take the form of 2 grant proposals and the skeletons of two manuscripts (the research isn't done yet, but there's no reason I can't write intro, methods and all that).
Here's a list of the participants thus far. Sign up in the comments!

I'm signing up.... although I'll have to commit to a word count later.
My project will be a new version of my Supreme Emergencies paper. I have a lot of new stuff to write, so I'll have to think about how much it will be.
I will sign up. I have to write 2.5 manuscripts. I don't know if that's feasible!
Sigh. I'm in--sign me up. The "sigh" is because I am so lame and non-working lately that I don't even know what a reasonable word goal would be. All I know is that I'm about 3 months behind on chapter deadlines and something needs to happen fast.
I'll commit to a word count when I figure it out...But I'm in! :)
Sign me up! Perhaps facing the word meter on my blog every day will be sufficient motivation to get cracking on that pesky dissertation proposal.
Sniff sniff, I thought you liked my trash talking... sniff sniff. Besides you kicked my ass last year!!
Weezy, you're my favorite trash talker! And I am looking forward to kicking your ass AGAIN this year. ;)
I'm in - I need to think about word count, though. I need some accountability!
I'm in! I have to get a word count together still but I have a grant due mid-November, and 2 manuscripts I wanted to finish by the end of the year....
I have no idea how to "count" words for this kind of thing, so I will probably just... lie? Just kidding. Seriously, though... counting words when you're revising seems next to impossible. I'll do my best to estimate.
Girl, I have 2 1/2 chapters to finish by the end of the year. I'll be in super bitch mode!!!
I'm in! There's much dissertating to be done.
Yep. Count me in too. I'll have to do some thinking about a word count.
I'm in! But I'll be writing Ch. #1, so I'll have to think about word count/pacing.
Me too, I'll post my goal at my blog when I have decided
Sorry about that! I forgot the way blogger comments link... Anyways, I'm at www.slimcoincidence.com/blog.
I created a blog so I can join as well.
Great idea, I'm excited.

I'm in. I was already thinking about how I wanted to get my book seriously kicked off ... I think I'll work on that plus some manuscripts that are all sketched out but not more than bullet points yet.
I'm in! I'll post my goals on my blog before November 1st.
DBH, if you can write 20,000 words, then dammit, so can I. I just gotta get my friggin' IRB approved!
Me too. Sigh. For the same reasons as luckybuzz. You guys (in a non-gendered sense of guys) inspire the hell out of me, so I'll try and get something done. Sigh.
This is good for me. I know that. Sigh.
I don't have much writing to do, but I certainly have a couple hundred pages to revise. . . Does that count as participation?
Trillwing - sure, that can count! I'm pretty sure that last year someone was doing revisions. You're on your own for figuring out how to count it, though!
yes please! i need it to end. this may save me from my inevitable demise ;)
yup, count me in. . .
I'll pledge 30,000 words (solid draft)
Oooh, what a cool idea! Count me in for this too --- I need to get a chapter out. I have a chunk written up already, so ... I think 15,000 words? (this may need to be adjusted).
I wish I could do this, but if life is anything like the last two weeks, I'll be lucky to finish my school work. Good luck to everyone, though. This sounds great!
I'm in. 20,000 words. That's insane by the way.
i'm in. my goals is to send back an R&R and write 1 article-length dissertation chapter. however many words it takes.
Ok this is crazy, but so is NaNoWriMo. I'll finish one field exam and begin revision on a rejected article.
By the way, do field notes count?
Damn. I'm away for half of November. I can pledge to get through revisions of two chapters during the latter half of the month...
I'm in, but I need to subtract words for my goal - cut the dissertation down to two much, much shorter articles and submit at least one by the end of the month. I have to get off my ass on this so this is some incentive. Don't publish my name, then I'll actually have to do it :0
Welcome all! Marc, you can count whatever you like, it's up to you!
Field Notes - ok, I won't put you on the "official" list. :)
Yay, I'm in. I've got to submit three manuscripts before Nov. 30th so I really need this. Donæt know about the word count yet, it probably won't be high because it's all revision rather than producing new text.
so glad i decided to blog around and saw this! i am so in. dunno how many pages i can commit to, but i am SO doing this.
I'm in.
I need a thesis writing kick anyway - need to submit by april to keep the schedule of my life on track reasonably.
I'm writing a mathematics dissertation, so wordcount is a slightly weird thing to discuss (that elaborate equation - how many words is that, really?) - and anyway, the expected length of my dissertation is probably on par with a chapter of what some of you guys write.
Anyway - I'll pledge a page a day. Whatever my pagecount is on November 1st (I'll post then), I pledge that by December 1st, I'll have 30 pages more.
Currently, I have 21 pages. But only a skeleton - with chapter headings and nothing else - was 17, so I'm not that impressed quite yet.
Count me in as a reviser. I've got a paper which I've had the reviewer comments on since May, but ummm life's been a little busy so I haven't gotten to all of them. I'll count comments addressed.
Oh what the hell - my husband is doing NaNoWriMo this year so it's not like I'll have anyone to talk to in the evenings.
I pledge 20,000 words, to be divided more or less equally between a manuscript on a British Jurassic dinosaur and a morphometric study on dinosaur skulls.
Go me.
Apologies. I seem to have botched the same little detail as several previous commenters.
I will be posting the writing updates on my livejournal:
http://michiexile.livejournal.com/
I'm in! Got to finish a book chapter (good fun to write - based on PhD thesis, plus involves working with former PhD supervisor), and a review article (sheer hell - working with current PI which is just...well, not pretty really). I'm really beyond the writing stage of both - more into the co-author draft ping-pong and finishing the figures but that is usually the most time consuming.
I commit! And though I may need to be committed when all is said and done, I think this is a great project! Inspirational really. Thank you to Billie at http://dissertation-bootcamp.blogspot.com for encouraging all their loyal readers to join in the fun.
You can visit my blog at http://dissertationdeconstruction.blogspot.com
Thanks! I'm really getting geared up for November!
DONNA
I'm signing up too, but am recovering from back surgery (almost two weeks ago) so we'll have to see how I'm feeling before I commit to a word count. Right now, I feel relatively comfortable saying 10,000 words, but I'd like to shoot for 20,000. We'll see how it goes.
I'm in. I don't know anything about 20,000 words but I'll see what I'm made of.
Looking forward to Thanksgiving already...
This is actually making me resurrect my blog. Let's say 15,000 words, in the form of a dissertation chapter.
Ha ha ha, what am I THINKING? But yes, I'm going to sign up. Just cos the dissertation's done doesn't mean I should stop writing.
I reckon if I write 1000 words a day for 25 days in November, I can turn two or three chapters of the dissertation into mediocre paper drafts. So, 25000 words is my plan.
(And HOORAY to you for picking up the torch and running with it, or some other tiresome sports metaphor.)
Just what I need, public accountability. Count me in for 13,000 words. Yikes!
Just the thing I was looking for and never expected to find! Count me in for to do 20,000 words of revision of rough draft.
At the wire, but I'm in. I have a supremely nasty chapter to write, and this might be the best way to force me into it. I'm aiming for 15,000 words, gah.
Thanks for organizing, Dr. Hussy. (Oh, and apparently I'm de-lurking here as well. Hi!)
I'm in, just under the wire, for 10,000 words. Not my diss yet, but a bunch of other stuff that I need to get done!
Oh god- I should really use this as an excuse to finish the paper that I haven't even touched in almost 4 MONTHS! I am going to pledge a measly 2,500 words, since that should be enough to finish the paper (it's at 3,500 already) and start something else. I have a TON of grading in the next few days, so I doubt Nov 1st will be productive on the writing front, but I still have the rest of the month!
I should do this. This is good.
I pledge 10,000 words.
Oh, good hell.
This sounds super! I'm not a write-up stage yet, but I have a paper and a proposal to get together this month. I'll pledge 10 000 words.
is it too late to join in? i need something to get motivated...and how do i find the nifty sitemeter???
I want to join, too. I need a serious kick in the butt and this is just the ticket.
I'm in. I'm done with my dissertation but I'm working on submitting a bookchapter this month as well as drafts of my current project. I hope to resurrect my blog, too.
I'm working on my master's thesis. Well, I need to start writing it, actually.
I'll commit 7,000 words.
All of the sudden I have this sinking feeling...
Aw, I missed the registration...!? I'm writing a diss. There are certain things in it that I'm not sure how they count as words, but I'll sign myself up for 20,000 words anyway. I totally need to be doing some writing...
I'll hate myself in the morning, but I'm in. I'm aiming for a crude draft (that's the stage before a rough draft) on my woolly mammoth book by the end of the year. Call it 12,000 words for this month.
