Dear Dr. Hussy,I have never seen this much helpful information in an acknowledgment letter!
Thank you for your interest and application for the open position in our X Department at X University. Enclosed is an identity card form that our Personnel Department requires all applications to be sent upon receiving their application. At your option, you may return it.
We will be hiring one full-time tenure track assistant professor from our application pool. We will begin screening applications December 15 and will continue until the position is filled. We expect to conduct interviews (which will include both a teaching and a research seminar presentation) in February.
Letter 2:
Dear Dr. Hussy,In other words: don't call us, we'll call you.
Thank you for your interest in the Y position at Y College. If you have not already done so, please have your referees forward their letters of recommendation to us before the deadline.
The subcommittee reviewing applications for this position will make its short list as soon as possible. Further inquiries on the status of your application before that time would be premature.

Yeah, the second one sounds like the standard crapola.
Good luck!!!
Who gives a fuck about this nonsense? All that matters are the responses you get after your applications are assessed.
Oh PP, you are getting so predictable. I simply thought the difference between these letters was amusing, and posted them for the benefit of people who occasionally post requests for advice on how to write such letters.
At least you're getting acknowledgment letters :( I've lost count of how many applications I've sent and only 3 or 4 places have bothered to let me know they got my application! Good luck!
